GRF Publishes H1 2023 Semiannual Ransomware Report

GRF analysts recently completed the first half of year 2023 update of the semiannual ransomware report series that tracks attacks based on public sources and conversations of threat actors in closed forums. Analysts compiled data on 1,650 attacks. Some key findings:

  • Critical Manufacturing was again the most targeted industry sector with 287 victims. The next most targeted sectors were Financial Services (153), Information Technology (152) and Commercial Facilities (111)

  • This reporting period included the highest number of victims in a single month since the beginning of this series, with 389 victims in June.

  • The majority of attacks were committed by LockBit’s version of ransomware, with 490 victims.

  • The United States was targeted by 56% of all ransomware activity tracked by GRF analysts, with 17% directed at countries within the EU, followed by 7% targeting the UK.

  • This reporting period saw extensive use of zero day vulnerabilities and increased use of Living off the Land attacks
